A fitness fanatic was trapped under weights for 33 minutes while waiting for emergency services to free him.
The man, aged between 25 and 35, was training at Snap Fitness in Spring Hill, Brisbane, at 5.47am on Thursday when he ran into trouble.
Firefighters did not arrive to rescue him until 6:20 a.m. and paramedics arrived shortly after. It took six minutes to pull the man out from under the weights.
At that point the man was unconscious and had to be resuscitated.
He was taken to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in critical condition.
At the time, the 24-hour gym was unmanned and the man had to be helped by bystanders.
“His injury occurred while doing a seated overhead press on a Smith machine,” a gym member wrote online.
“He didn’t appear life-threatening at first, although he was serious enough to call an ambulance.
“But it took about 10 to 15 minutes to get really serious, that is, ‘he-is-unconscious-now-start-CPR-now’ serious.”
Smith machines were designed to allow gym goers to lift barbells without an observer.
Snap Fitness is open 24 hours a day, every day, but there are only staff on-site Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Queensland Police said the incident was “not a criminal matter”.
