A Chicago suburb couple has adopted daughter after agency shuts down

CHICAGO (CBS) — Five years ago, CBS 2 told you about a suburban couple who were devastated when an adoption agency suddenly closed and their dreams of adopting another child ended.

But now they have a reason to say thank you this holiday season. CBS 2’s Marybel Gonzalez was there when her long journey finally came to an end.

This Friday marks the day before National Adoption Day. But for the Hickey family, they like to call it “Maddies Gotcha Day.”

“It’s been a very long journey.”

After almost four years in their care, James and David Hickey can finally officially call Maddie their own.

“We’ve had Maddy since she was one year old and she’s going to be five soon, so we’re just really lucky,” said James Hickey.

The couple is no stranger to adoption, but getting here hasn’t always been easy. CBS 2 sat down with the Hickeys back in 2017. By this time they had their little boy, Franklin, but their hopes of increasing their family were dashed.

After years of waiting and spending almost $15,000 on the Independent Adoption Center, they received an email saying the agency was going bankrupt and their adoption was not possible.

“We’re just over the moon, happy and excited.”

Today, the Hickeys celebrate a moment that comes full circle by adopting Maddie from the foster system.

“Both our children are a joy, but she has my guts and attitude.”

And join the other families at the Cook County Courthouse who have opened their hearts and homes to children who need it most.

“I would say we should explore the foster family option. It may take some time, but it’s a great way to do it. It has helped us complete our family.”

All the magic for Maddie’s family happened in the building, and there’s more good news for other families like her. Cook County announced they have reduced their adoption case fees from $265 to $89 to make it easier for children to find their forever homes.
