OPPO partners with Qualcomm to bring innovation to smartphones

Smartphone maker OPPO has announced it is collaborating with Qualcomm on ray tracing graphics for mobile devices.

The announcement was made at this week’s Snapdragon Summit.

On top of Snapdragon, OPPO demonstrated the breakthroughs achieved in its collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies and Google to implement Google Vertex AI Neural Architecture Search (Google NAS) on a smartphone for the first time.

The new solution aims to increase the power efficiency and latency of AI processing on mobile devices.

Innovative technology

As a long-time partner of Qualcomm Technologies, OPPO has also announced that it will use the latest launched premium mobile platform Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 in its next Find X foldable devices.

The company’s collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies has entered a new phase, said Pete Lau, senior vice president and chief product officer at OPPO.

“Together we have conducted research in several cutting-edge technology areas that will support the development and implementation of innovative technologies on mobile devices.”

Snapdragon Summit 2022 attendees were able to experience this ray tracing technology in live game demos.

Running on a smartphone with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 Mobile Platform and multiple ray tracing effects enabled, top mobile games can run at a constant 60 FPS while providing lifelike soft shadows and reflections for the highest visual gaming quality.

Compared to previous software-only generations, ray tracing rendering efficiency has increased by a factor of 5 and reduced CPU workload by 90%.

OPPO said these advances will allow the mobile game industry to break free from its reliance on using software simulation to achieve ray-traced effects and instead bring advanced, ultra-realistic lighting to complex, large-scale game scenes on mobile devices.

In addition to collaborating on mobile ray tracing technology, OPPO says it has collaborated with Qualcomm Technologies and Google to improve future AI capabilities on mobile devices.

“During the cooperation, OPPO successfully integrated hardware power reward into Google NAS for the first time.

“By optimizing the AI ‚Äč‚Äčalgorithms based on the specific chip characteristics, OPPO’s implementation achieves a 27% performance reduction of the target detection algorithm and a 40% reduction in computation latency.”

Snapdragon’s platforms

Snapdragon’s flagship mobile platform has been presented on several OPPO smartphones.

In 2022, the OPPO Find X5 Pro flagship smartphone was one of the first to be powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, delivering unprecedented experiences in connectivity, AI, gaming, video, audio and security.

Previously, OPPO had released many smartphones with Snapdragon 5G mobile platforms, including Find X3 series and Reno6 series.
