Chaotic scenes from the World Cup fan zone

There were reports of chaotic scenes at a World Cup fan zone in Doha ahead of the tournament’s first game on November 20, with a huge crowd overwhelming capacity, and some fans reported fearing for their safety amid the crush. The fan zone in Al Bidda Park has a capacity of 40,000 spectators, but up to twice as many attempted entry. A source who sent the video anonymously to Storyful said he saw “terrifying and shocking scenes at the entrance to the Qatar fan festival.” His video shows a large crowd in front of the venue. Other videos showed crowds pushing forward and security forces trying to hold people back. The crowd can be heard chanting “Open” at officers near the entrance. ESPN reported that local officials blocked access to Al Bidda Park as the venue reached capacity, but that fans were still lining up an hour before the 7pm local time kick-off between Qatar and Ecuador. No arrests or injuries were reported. Source: Anonymously via Storyful
