Is the ROG Strix Scar 17 the world’s fastest laptop?

The ROG Strix Scar 17 laptop is something very special – it features the latest Intel i9 silicon paired with a 3080ti and DDR5 memory.

It’s built to be future-proof and might justify the name of the world’s fastest laptop. This laptop will do everything you need it to, just better in every way.

This experience comes at a premium price though – at R70,000 it’s nothing to sneeze at.

So what do you get for your money?

design and build

It’s not without its quirks, well for starters there’s no built-in camera which could mean thinner bezels but in a world of constant Zoom meetings you’ll need an external camera.

Streamers don’t use the built-in camera anyway, their setup is too advanced for such things, but the average person does.

The mostly aluminum construction feels premium and there are beauty covers throughout that you can change to change up the design even on the underside. You may be wondering why.

Well, ROG stands for Republic Of Gamers – for gamers by gamers – and for us the construction and build quality count as much as the inner workings.

Built for gaming

And the Strix series is their no-nonsense high-end competitive gaming laptop. This laptop is at home in the highly competitive eSports world where every frame counts.

If there’s one thing all laptop manufacturers need to understand – whether you’re using it for gaming, business, or just browsing websites – the most important feature is the display.

Because that’s what the user interacts with the most, and a boring and boring screen equals a boring and boring experience.

Asus has delivered a truly stunning experience with this device, amazing to look at and drool over.

ROG Strix Scar 17 display

A 17″ 240Hz IPS QHD display to immerse yourself and make everyone happy like never before. ROG Strix screams cool from every angle.

This laptop is a beast when it comes to gaming and never dips below 60 FPS.

As is well known, this can also be due to the RGB lighting: the more lighting, the more FPS you get, of course.

Jokes aside… The ROG Strix gaming experience was pure, and you can tell that each performance framework has been pushed to the ultimate limit to give you the edge in competitive gaming.

No expense has been spared and you can rest assured that you are getting the ultimate laptop gaming experience.

Too hot to act?

But as with all gaming laptops, temperatures are far higher than their desktop counterparts.

I got 88IslandC under load, and while this is perfectly normal (below what other competitors could achieve, in fact), I still experienced random black screens.

But this could also be attributed to the recent heatwave in Gauteng.

The keyboard didn’t get uncomfortably hot, and the fans won’t wake your kids up loud at night.

ROG Strix Scar 17 review: conclusion

So does it deserve your attention?

If you’re a total hardcore enthusiast and you just need the latest silicon, then this laptop isn’t the world’s fastest laptop for nothing.

And if you have R70k burning a hole in your pocket, it’s a no-brainer.

However, for the average and casual gamer, you might want to look at the Asus Flow range.
