Isetan Mitsukoshi opens first Filipino store to promote Japanese lifestyle

Major Japanese department store operator Isetan Mitsukoshi Holdings Ltd has opened its first store in the Philippines, capitalizing on the Southeast Asian country’s growth potential to promote lifestyle products made in Japan.

The new Mitsukoshi BGC mall, which opened on Friday in Manila’s upscale Bonifacio Global City district, offers a range of Japanese products, including pastries and cosmetics.

The 28,000-square-foot commercial property is scheduled to open in the first quarter of next year after all of the approximately 120 tenants, mostly from Japan and the Philippines, have moved in.

The mall also includes a Kinokuniya bookstore that offers Japanese books, manga, and stationery, and a Mitsukoshi Beauty cosmetics store with a wide range of natural and organic products.

Dining options include Putien, a Michelin-starred Chinese restaurant, Sen-ryo, a sushi restaurant, a branch of the Ramen Nagi chain, and a CoCo Ichibanya curry shop.

Isetan Mitsukoshi also operates stores in China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and the United States.

The Manila Mall is part of a joint residential and commercial development project with Nomura Real Estate Development Co and local developer Federal Land Inc.

Mitsukoshi BGC occupies the first to third floors and the first basement of the 54-storey complex, while the rest of the facility is mainly reserved for 1,400 residential units.

Four condominium towers under construction on top of the mall are scheduled for completion in 2027.

An official from Isetan Mitsukoshi expressed hope that the mall will contribute to urban development, saying, “We want to propose a new lifestyle that blends Japanese and Filipino cultures.”
