A new generation of smartphone chips will arrive in 2023 and promise new applications, such as filming videos in 8K HDR quality at 60 frames per second. But is it really that useful?
The arrival of Qualcomm’s latest system-on-chip (SoC) dubbed the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will change the game again. While there are already smartphones capable of recording video in 8K resolution, this new generation chipset will boost performance and boost video quality to 8K60p HDR.
In other words, it will be possible to shoot in ultra high definition with a wide range of vivid colors. This performance should be of particular interest to professionals who can record content in very high quality with a simple smartphone without heavy equipment, even if the image has to be post-processed afterwards in order to obtain optimal 4K sequences.
Currently, 8K is the highest image resolution available, with 7680 x 4320 pixels, or a total of more than 33 million pixels. That’s more than four times the resolution of 4K! While filming in 8K is already quite a feat, you’ll need the right companion hardware to fully enjoy these videos.
You’ll need a compatible TV, for example, and there aren’t many of those on the market right now. This can be explained by the fact that ultra high definition content is still relatively rare and that viewing lower quality images on such screens is not necessarily flattering.
In general, this new Qualcomm chip will increase the performance of future smartphones, with a graphics rendering that promises to be 25% faster than that of the current Soc (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1) and offers unprecedented realism, especially for video game content.
The integrated processor is also said to quadruple the performance of the artificial intelligence. Finally, this new SoC will obviously be compatible with the latest WiFi (7) and Bluetooth (5.3) standards.
The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 is expected to be adopted by brands like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus and Sony by the end of 2022.
In fact, Xiaomi Corporation announced earlier this week that its latest line of flagship devices, the Xiaomi 12T series, is now available in South Africa.

The brand emphasized the fact that the phones were made available just in time to capture and share holiday experiences from “Ke Dezemba” online with family, friends and fans.
Perhaps the most impressive feature of the Xiaomi 12T series flagship is the brand’s revolutionary 200MP main camera.
A 200 megapixel camera in a smartphone?
“The Xiaomi 12T Pro steals the limelight with its 200MP professional imaging system that offers superior smartphone camera resolution and offers users the ultimate in flagship photography.
Supported by a combination of hardware and software features, including Xiaomi’s own advanced algorithms, the three key benefits for Xiaomi 12T Pro users are unparalleled image sharpness, low-light capabilities and fast focusing.”
The manufacturer goes on to state that the 200-megapixel main camera offers an industry-leading smartphone camera resolution, allowing users to capture crystal-clear photos with fine detail at all times.
The phone’s other photo and video features also make taking photos and videos a breeze.
This includes Xiaomi ProFocus, which offers different composition options to highlight key elements, whether you want to highlight character, create an editorial look, or focus on a subject for dramatic effects.
There is also the Xiaomi ProCut feature, which not only can create different aspect ratios, but also can identify two different people in a photo and accurately crop the image into separate photos based on its intelligent aesthetic algorithm.
“The Ultra Burst feature also lets you capture up to 30 photos per second, so you can capture the perfect somersault or snap a picture of everyone looking at the camera.
Xiaomi’s night mode allows users to capture bright and clean shots even in extremely low light conditions. That means no more problems when the sun goes down or loadshedding hits.”
Both phones in the series have long-lasting battery and super-fast charging thanks to the manufacturer’s 120W HyperCharge capability and long-lasting battery.
According to Xiaomi, you can enjoy up to 13.5 hours of screen time after a 19-minute charge.
Next level performance and content
“The Xiaomi 12T series offers industry-leading technology and the Xiaomi 12T Pro is among the first devices to feature the new Snapdragon® 8+ Gen 1, which offers breakthrough innovations in AI, photography, gaming and connectivity. This technology also ensures the device is fast and intelligent, promoting an energy-efficient manufacturing process and effortless peak performance.”
The Xiaomi 12T, on the other hand, is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 8100 Ultra chipset, which offers the perfect balance of performance and efficiency with CPU and GPU performance boosts and better power efficiency.
The devices – which come in black and blue colors with 8GB RAM and 256GB ROM for the Xiaomi 12T and 12GB RAM and 256GB ROM for the Xiaomi 12T Pro – also pack a 120Hz CrystalRes AMOLED display , which offers you smoother movements and transitions.
“With 1220p resolution and over 68 billion colors, you’ll enjoy a mega viewing experience. It is perfectly designed to balance clarity, color detail and energy efficiency. This display also features an AdaptiveSync display that helps maximize battery life by allowing refresh rates to automatically adjust based on content. Vivid colors and high contrast are also guaranteed with Adaptive True Display.”
The phones have a suggested retail price of R13,999 for the Xiaomi 12T and R16,999 for the 12T Pro.
