According to police and media reports, New York police have arrested a woman accused of stealing gifts from under Robert De Niro’s Christmas tree after breaking into the actor’s Upper East Side apartment.
Police officers saw the woman enter the basement of the building on East 65th Street around 2:45 a.m. local time (6:45 p.m. AEDT) Monday and found signs of forced entry, according to Arthur Tsui, a spokesman for the New York City Police Department.
The 30-year-old woman was known to police for a number of previous burglary arrests, and officers caught her at the home stealing items, Mr Tsui said.
The United States’ ABC News reported that she was stuffing presents into a bag under a Christmas tree and that De Niro, 79, was at home at the time and came down the stairs in the commotion.
The woman is in custody and charges are pending against her, Mr Tsui said. A spokesman for the Manhattan District Attorney said the woman will likely appear in court later Monday or early Tuesday and it’s not immediately clear if she has an attorney.
Stan Rosenfield, a spokesman for De Niro, said he had no comment on the case other than saying the break-in occurred at a temporary rental home for the Oscar-winning Raging Bull and Taxi Driver star.
