During the war, a Red Cross facility in Donetsk is hit by shells

An office building of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Donetsk was hit by shells this week as the war in Ukraine is officially in its 10th month.

Fox News Digital was unable to immediately reach the ICRC to comment on the extent of the damage inflicted or the alleged side of the strike, although no one was reported killed or injured in Monday’s attack.

“The grenade that landed in the courtyard of the ICRC’s Donetsk office late Monday was the third incident to affect the entire Red Cross family in recent days,” the ICRC said in a statement.

Two people were killed and several others injured on Sunday after an ICRC-backed hospital in Donetsk was also hit by a strike.

A volunteer from the Ukrainian Red Cross emergency response team in Kherson was also killed during shelling last week, the statement added.

“The ICRC strongly condemns the impact of the hostilities on our office and calls for respect for the humanitarian space,” the ICRC said. “Under international humanitarian law, the parties have an obligation to take all possible precautions to avoid harming civilians and damaging civilian objects, including humanitarian facilities.”

Heavy fighting continues around the village of Pisky, some six miles from the city of Donetsk, in what is considered a “contested area”.

The city of Donetsk is located in the Donbass region, where the Russian-backed and self-proclaimed People’s Republics of Donetsk and Lugansk have been locked in armed conflict with the Ukrainian government since 2014.

In the run-up to his invasion, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized the two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine as “independent” from Kyiv before annexing Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhia and Kherson in September.

If Ukrainian troops are able to push Russian forces back into the city of Donetsk, it will be the first time they have gained a foothold across the Donbass lines since the war began 10 months ago.
