The regulator granted an extension to rule on Eskom’s request for a 32% tariff increase

South Africans will have to wait and see if Eskom gets a 32% tariff hike.

The North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has granted the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) an extension of time to make their final decision on Eskom’s fiscal year 2023/24 revenue request.

The extension comes after the court previously ordered the regulator to rule on the tax application on or before December 24.

Eskom’s request, if approved, would result in a 32% increase in the standard tariff in April 2023.

The Supreme Court has now extended the deadline for a decision to January 12, 2023, Nersa said on Wednesday.

In the same tariff application, the ailing energy supplier is aiming for a further increase of 9.74% for 2024/25.

Nersa was due to make a decision last week, but its electricity subcommittee asked for more time after a meeting to consider 14 concerns raised by regulators.
