Which TV show had the biggest impact on fashion?

They make and break trends and influence our outfits like never before. And we’re not talking about luxury brands or Kim Kardashian, but about TV shows that have become major sources of inspiration.

In fact, in a matter of months, Euphoria — the most influential fashion show of the year — managed to make the Y2K aesthetic more desirable than ever.

Some TV shows are inseparable from fashion. Gossip Girl and Sex and the City proved this time and time again, managing to propel a brand or designer to dizzying heights of popularity in just one episode.

But in recent years, the impact of TV shows on the fashion world has surpassed anything previously seen. Dramas like “Squid Game” or “Lupin” with storylines far removed from fashion folklore have managed to become true trendsetters.

This phenomenon has transformed simple fictional characters into huge fashion influencers.

The Y2K comeback

On that front, Euphoria – the drama starring Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie and Barbie Ferreira – tops the list as the most influential fashion-themed TV series of 2022.

A study by fast fashion brand Boohoo* reports no fewer than 132,900 monthly searches worldwide that associate the series with fashion.

Those numbers are impressive, especially considering the show’s second season aired in early 2022. The study also shows that the term “euphoria outfits” was searched an average of 121,000 times per month, more than for all other TV series in the top 10 combined.

While all of the show’s stars are now considered fashion icons, it’s worth noting that Alexa Demie – aka Maddy Perez – has particularly excelled this year by making a huge contribution to the Y2K revival in our closets.

From low-rise pants and crop tops to butterfly accessories, chokers and even jumpsuits, countless fashion pieces featured on the show have made their way into wardrobes year-round, fueled long after it aired the show by icons such as Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid.

All of this goes to show just how much these TV shows are influencing fashion, especially via social media – and by extension, the younger generations.

French chic

Though way behind Euphoria, Emily in Paris — whose third season lands on Netflix December 21 — is also driving trends, with no fewer than 39,900 monthly global searches for terms related to the show’s fashion pieces. This success has clearly helped French chic – albeit somewhat caricatured in the romantic comedy show – to become one of this year’s top fashion trends.

The beret, blazer, tall boots and leopard print coats are among the pieces that have been upgraded through the series.

The rest of the ranking is made up of Stranger Things (28,800 monthly searches), which revives a certain nostalgia for 1980s fashion, Peaky Blinders (18,200) and Bridgerton (14,400). led to unexpected trends like corsets or long gloves. And although these have not yet caught on on the streets, they can be found on all social networks.

Note that “Euphoria” is also credited as the show that had the greatest impact on fashion of all time. However, this finding should be taken with caution, as shows like Gossip Girl and Sex and the City — which aired in the late 1990s and early 2000s — did not benefit from the analysis of such search data on platforms like Google back then.

It is therefore difficult to determine which drama was really the most influential of all time in the fashion world.
