China must increase self-sufficiency in agricultural engineering, says Xi

President Xi Jinping wants China to speed up efforts to achieve self-reliance in agricultural technology, identifying seed development and core equipment as areas to focus on, state media reported.

Central leadership had said in 2020 that the country’s seed industry is a weak link in the food chain and needs to make better use of science and technology to turn the tide.

“It is necessary to keep in mind the frontiers of agricultural science and technology in the world,” the official Xinhua News Agency quoted Xi as saying at a central rural labor conference in Beijing.

The president urged China’s agricultural sector to “strongly improve” its science and technology through more efficient innovation.

Xi urged the sector to address issues with innovation, such as the rate of conversion into commercial applications and lack of collaboration between research teams.

China has invested large sums of money in basic research for agriculture, but there are few large commercial companies investing in long-term R&D to bring innovative solutions to the market.
