Sage O’Donnell: Australian dies fighting Russian invasion of Ukraine

A Victorian man has been killed in fighting in Ukraine, the Department for Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) has confirmed.

Former Australian Army soldier Sage O’Donnell, 24, died in the days before Christmas, according to sources The Herald Sun.

Mr O’Donnell’s grieving mother issued a statement on DFAT. She said the family was “devastated” by the news.

She described her son as humorous and kind-hearted.

“Sage was loved dearly by his friends and family. Sage’s humor, kind heart, values ​​and laughter will be greatly missed. We are devastated by our recent loss of Sage,” she said.

“Sage has been passionate about his values ​​and has served here in his own country and most recently in Ukraine.

“Sage has chosen to take action based on his empathy for the Ukrainian people and the injustice that is taking place.

“He fell in love with Ukraine and its culture and was struck by the kindness and hospitality of his new community.”

DFAT confirmed they are “providing consular assistance to the family.”

Mr O’Donnell is believed to be the fourth Australian to have died during the Russian invasion of Ukraine abc news.

Last month, Australian Trevor Kjeldal was killed in a mortar attack while fighting Russian forces in Ukraine’s Donbass.
