The Welsh village in the crosshairs of climate change

A decade ago, Fairbourne – a village on the west coast of Wales – was sentenced to death. Faced with the threat of rising sea levels, Gwynedd Council passed proposals in 2013 to end maintenance of the village’s flood defenses and relocate its residents in 40 to 50 years. But residents say the order quickly “contaminated” the village. With potential home buyers unable to obtain mortgages, sales have dried up and home values have fallen by almost half.
