Crash in China: Photos show a pile-up of 200 vehicles

One person died in a pile-up on a highway in central China involving hundreds of vehicles, state broadcaster CCTV reported Wednesday. Pictures of the accident showed chaotic scenes.

Aerial images showed hundreds of cars, vans and trucks – many of which had crashed into each other – piled up on a stretch of highway in thick fog.

Other viral videos posted online showed the mangled remains of several vehicles that had crashed into others.

The accident happened due to poor visibility caused by fog near the city of Zhengzhou in Henan province and affected at least 200 vehicles, state media reported.

“On Wednesday morning, a sudden formation of fog occurred at the Zhengxin Yellow River Bridge in Zhengzhou, causing a traffic accident in which several vehicles collided,” CCTV quoted Zhengzhou authorities as saying, adding that one person died as a result.

Zhengzhou Traffic Police said on its official social media account that traffic on the overpass resumed on Wednesday afternoon.

Emergency rescue efforts were carried out shortly after the accident, the CCTV report said.

Road accidents are commonplace in China due to the lack of strict security controls. In September, 27 passengers died after a bus taking them to quarantine facilities in southwestern Guizhou province overturned on a highway.
