new York

While Times Square is lit up year-round, it seems like it takes on a special glow on New Year’s Eve. There is a special event called Ball Drop.

Basically, a ball descends from a specially designed flagpole at 11:59 p.m. and rests at midnight to signal the start of the new year. It is a free event as numerous people flock to the venue to take part in the celebration.

Rio de Janeiro

It’s the city of samba, so of course there are parties all over the city.

But Copacabana Beach is definitely the place to be with the massive fireworks displays as everyone takes advantage of the warm New Year’s weather that the city is blessed with.
