The Ukrainian military on Tuesday claimed there had been another devastating attack on Russian troops.
The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said about 500 Russian soldiers were either killed or wounded in an attack near Chulakivka, a city in the southern Kherson region, on New Year’s Eve.
“The enemy continues to take casualties. It was confirmed that on December 31, the Ukrainian Defense Forces hit an enemy troop and equipment stronghold near Chulakivka in the Kherson region,” the General Staff said. “Some 500 enemy troops were wounded and killed.”
Natalia Humeniuk, a spokeswoman for the Ukrainian armed forces in the south, told Ukrainian TV: “This is one of our achievements in this front line.”
“There will be more as we identify enemy locations,” she said of the alleged hit.
CNN cannot verify the Ukrainian claim. Moscow has not publicly commented on Chulakivka’s claim.
However, a widely read Russian war blog known as “Operation Z” said in a Telegram post on Tuesday, “there is no denying” that Ukraine is now attacking barracks and other Russian troop strongholds with HIMARS, a reference to high mobility artillery -missile systems. He included Chulakivka in his list of attacks on Russian troops that he said took place in December.
It comes after both Russian and Ukrainian authorities conceded a strike that took place just after midnight on New Year’s Day at a vocational school for Russian conscripts in Makiivka, in the Donetsk region.
The Russian Defense Ministry said 89 soldiers were killed in the New Year’s Day strike, making it one of the deadliest episodes of the war for Moscow’s armed forces.
