Antibiotic deficiency affects “particularly children”

RACGP President Dr. Nicole Higgins says antibiotic shortages are “particularly impacting children” because of the types of medicines and formulations needed.

“Right now we’re seeing an increase in some serious bacterial infections in children, like Strep A and bacterial meningitis,” she told Sky News Australia.

“What we need to do with our fellow pharmacists is … either change the formulations we use – adult compound medicines to children’s medicines.

“We need to ensure that Australia is indeed able to stockpile essential medicines and those that are really in short supply need to be quarantined for correct access.”
