Where can you get a safe abortion in Gauteng?

Although abortion has been legal in South Africa since November 1996, it is estimated that between 52% and 58% of the estimated 260,000 abortions that take place in South Africa each year are illegal.

According to the World Health Organization, around 7 million women in developing countries are hospitalized for unsafe abortions each year.

On Monday, the Gauteng Department of Health warned women about the dangers and side effects of backyard abortions.

They urged women not to risk their lives with these “flying” abortions as they have many side effects, including infection, severe blood loss and damage to the cervix that can prevent them from getting pregnant again.

When can you have an abortion in South Africa?

According to the South African government website, a woman must be less than 13 weeks pregnant to have an abortion without giving a reason for the abortion.

A pregnancy between the 13th and 20th week can only be terminated under certain conditions.

Abortion after the 20th week of pregnancy is not legal in South Africa unless the life of the mother or the fetus is in danger or there are likely serious birth defects.
