Cardinal Pell’s legacy will continue to make an “ongoing contribution” to the Church

Archbishop of Hobart Julian Porteous says Cardinal George Pell was a “great leader” in the Catholic Church whose legacy “covers many, many areas”.

“He was very aware that the Catholic Church has a rich heritage in its intellectual tradition, in theology and so on, and was keen to see that pushed and developed in Australia,” Archbishop Porteous told Sky News Australia.

“So he founded a university, Notre Dame University in Sydney.”

Archbishop Porteous said Cardinal Pell “understood very clearly” what it took to help young people “live their faith, embrace the fullness and richness of the Catholic faith.”

“So many of these aspects of his legacy have, I believe, deeply influenced the Church in Australia and I believe will continue to make an ongoing contribution to the life and direction of the Church in Australia.”
