Godongwana: Eskom’s performance is inexplicable

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has criticized the operating performance of national energy company Eskom, saying the country’s energy minister must act urgently to procure more power generation.

Power supplies from all technologies, including nuclear, should be considered as priority must be given to security of supply, he said in an interview in Johannesburg on Thursday.

Eskom is currently subjecting South Africans to up to 10 hours of blackouts a day, or so-called Level 6 blackouts, with about half of its generation capacity offline, a situation Godongwana describes as “inexplicable”.
