The possibility of the elective surgery waiting list growing to 500,000 is not “surprising”.

No one should be “surprised” by the Australian Medical Association’s report showing the possibility that the waiting list for elective surgery could grow to 500,000, according to Shadow Secretary of State for Health and Aged Care Anne Ruston.

“We’ve known for some time the impact of COVID due to deferred care, people haven’t been screened, they haven’t been tested, elective surgeries have been put on hold because our hospital systems have responded to COVID,” she told Sky News Australia.

“Unfortunately, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that we’ve had a real challenge making sure we catch up on everything that’s been put aside during the COVID pandemic.”
