TikTok still irresistible? 5 steps to improve your family’s privacy now

Although it can be very good for those who engage in its entertaining videos and learn new tips, TikTok increases a growing threat to our privacy and security.

TikTok has earned a leading position in the world of social media platforms. All cool kids use TikTok. And most don’t bat an eyelid as they laugh, like, and share video after video.

It’s addictive, informative and fun for millions. TikTok, even more than other social networks, makes a huge compromise for your privacy and security because of how and what it collects about your life. The threat posed by TikTok is so extreme that some countries have banned it altogether. It’s not uncommon for parents working at big tech companies to ban their own children’s use of TikTok.

Ask this one question

Do I consent to the government of communist China having access to my child’s intimate personal information, knowing what catches their attention, and always tracking their whereabouts?

That’s not all TikTok exploits in terms of your family’s security and privacy. They secretly scrape bits of your life to serve up videos they’ve learned you’re watching and turn you into an attractive advertising target. This part is the obvious trade-off that we’d come to expect in a data-mining financial model that’s standard for every big tech media company.

The Chinese government can access your data via TikTok

What is special about TikTok is that it is owned by parent company ByteDance, which is based in mainland China. And in this country, government laws require that ByteDance grant access to its data for any reason and without a court order or warrant. TikTok claims it operates independently from ByteDance, but data moving from its US servers to mainland China has already been identified.

So what? TikTok collects a massive amount of data, which it then processes through a machine algorithm to master aspects of your life in exceptional detail. TikTok is known for recording the device you use, your location, your IP address, your search history, everything in all your messages, what you look at and for how long, biometric information including your face and voiceprints of who you know and how you interact with them.

TikTok knows more about you than you ever imagined

Sophisticated algorithms driving social media networks like TikTok can identify which topics and emotional tones most easily grab your attention.

All of this shaping your communication and interactions makes it an easy target for TikTok to steer one way or the other because you know what you’re going to react to like a puppet. It might sound like sci-fi, but it’s exactly why many Silicon Valley executives don’t allow their own children on TikTok and some other social media platforms.
