For Hong Kong-born Clare Ngai, founder of the BonbonWhims jewelry line, Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year, was a larger-than-life celebration of coming of age.
“It’s the equivalent of Thanksgiving and Christmas all rolled into one, but a month-long celebration of family, food and love,” Ngai said of the multi-week event, which will take place on March 27th this year.
“Unfortunately, due to COVID, I haven’t been home for more than three years to make dumplings with my mother and grandmother, among other things. There are days when I’m incredibly homesick, especially at this time of year, so it’s a great personal joy for me to celebrate my culture and heritage and share the meaning of Chinese New Year through my brand with our community. Similarly, Los Angeles industrial designer Christina Lau values the Lunar New Year because it emphasizes family and the optimism inherent in starting over.
Lau, who has created a line of handcrafted red envelopes for her Clau line of leather goods, says she enjoys making traditional dishes like sweet glutinous rice ball soup and visiting family.
“There are many traditions and celebrations that we will be doing over the 16 days, one of which is going to my parents and older siblings on the first day and saying thank you to them [Happy New Year]wishes them good health,” She said.
“In return I get a red envelope for good wishes and happiness for the year.”
